Guide to Japanese fashion magazines

Japanese magazines are really specific to which group/audience they target towards. Below is a list of magazines and brief description of their style & target audience. Click on the magazine name will lead you to the magazine's website (if there is one)

Last update 20100721

Their might be changes for the magazines since I first made this mid in 2009.

Women

Kids

For kids under 10. Mostly for mothers who like to dress up their child, or spoiled kids

Students/10s

11-15

Junior high students. Mostly casual with cute elements
15-18

High school students. Mostly sweet/cute/casual with some sexy to lure the boys:)

Street/Urahara

People from late teens to mid 20s. Mostly wears indies brands, vintage, not following mainstream

Casual

Late teens to 20s. Very simple and casual, with some romantic/sweet/cool elements depends on what's popular that season

Gyaru

Late teens to 20s. Girls who have the stereotypes of wearing heavy make-up, wear sexy clothes, noisy, etc. Most gyarus are tanned back in the days, but there are lots of "shiro gyarus" now

Hime Gyaru

Girly and princess type of gyaru, started during mid 2000s.

OL/Onee-kei

Akamojizasshi (Red letter magazines)

These five are the big boss of fashion magazines in Japan and they received the name because they all use red for their names on the cover. Sophisticated and mature style with elements of romantic/sweet/sexy style depends on what's popular that season, target towards university students to early 20s OL.
Sames as the Red letter magazines, except not as popular. Might be more mature/simple/glamorous depend on the magazine itself, but mostly aim towards university students and OLs as well.

Is Popteen really considered a gyaru mag? I've always thought they focused on a younger, more cutesy and general teen-fashion crowd, and don't usually feature the really sexy styles that Egg or S-Cawaii do.

there's also a fashion magazine called "ef". i think it's targeted toward OL's, probably mid-20's to mid-30's. it's a pretty great magazine, and has a lot of the big brand names in it. i don't know in which category it would fall... and i haven't been able to locate a web-site or any scans of it. last time i visited japan in november, it was in print though. if anyone knows any more on-line info on the magazine, i'd appreciate it!

Thank you very much for this list!! I've been itching to find a list like this for such a long time... Thank you thank you!

But, I think Namaiki Kilala has stopped publishing after just two issues. :( The publisher's page shows the most recent issue, from 2008... Also, their Gyao web page is also down. :(

Now, if I could only find Hime Style somewhere online to buy... :D

I had no idea Cawaii stopped publishing. What was the reason?

[info]keikeiaznqueen

May 18 2009, 09:44:45 UTC 3 years ago

Economic crisis. :( The magazine had longterm declining circulation and sales, and got less and less ads in it as well. Eventually it just had to close down.

Thanks so much for this, it's short, precise and exactly what I needed since I've always seen magazines around but was unsure what their content was.
